FEATURED ARTIST

ML F3LLS

Long Island, New York, United States

BACKGROUND

Matthew Fells, also known as ML F3LLS is recording artist from New York. The project is called "thoughts of the lost youth" comes in three parts (act 1, act 2, and a complete edition). We've been sent act 1 to have a listen to over at TJPL News. The meaning behind the project lies in the artist's philosophy to make music but always having held something back until now. As someone who has struggled to connect with people in the past, ML F3LLS mission is to shine a new light on all who are trying to be themselves. Act 1 was released on May 2 and consists of 3 songs - way up (what u need), on time, back to my roots - where he discusses coming out of his comfort zone and finally finding himself after years of doubt and uncertainty. In Act 2, he will be going deeper into his personal life to discuss how he escaped his past demons. Let's have a listen then!

EP REVIEW

thoughts of the lost youth: the rebirth (act 1)

ML F3LLS begins thoughts of the lost youth: the rebirth (act 1) with his track titled 'way up (what u need). This track opens with an old school soul sample before flipping over to emo rap. Heavy guitar and futuristic synths ride the wave behind the rap vocals. The hook slows back down to return to soulful sang lyrics. Vocal chops make all the difference to this part of the track. Emo rap meets soul? this is the very first time I've heard that and it's well cool! Track 2 entitled 'On Time' starts with the heaviest guitar distortion as the lyrics and vocal tone take a turn to the dark side as he says goodnight to his nightmares. Concluding thoughts of the lost youth: the rebirth (act 1), ML F3LLS takes us into the world of cinema in an opening that sounds like it should be in a Dracula movie. The sudden drop into a trap drum loop along works wonders to the mood of the track. Dark, futuristic and damn right genius lyrics by ML F3LLS. This is an artist to look out for, he has a special talent for mixing several genre influences into a linguistic wonderland. I cannot wait to hear act 2! Great work. Consistent skill throughout and a damn right masterpiece of darkness. Click the link below to check it out.

INTERVIEW

What would be your ultimate achievement for your latest EP? Is there a particular vision that you had when putting the song together?

The music I make is meant for live shows, so if the music gains enough traction then ultimately having the chance to be able to perform is the main goal. I want to bring people together and show that anything can be done by

If you could define music in one short sentence (no cheating) what would you say?

The purest form of art.

When did you first realise that you had the potential to be an artist? Is there a memory that has stuck in your mind as the turning point for you?

For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to make music. There were always doubts, but the kind of artist I wanted to be never really sat right with me every time I went into it. I’ve gone through phases of my life where I was in love with both sport and music, and never really could come across what I wanted to do, and that was until the pandemic hit. I went down a deep hole and lost myself. I never really had guidance for my future, didn’t want to go to college, and didn’t want to go to school. The only thing really getting me through it all was music. It’s always been there for me and I feel like I should be there for it as well. I finally put two and two together and decided to start writing and recording myself in my bedroom. My first song wasn’t great if I could remember, but the fact that I enjoyed doing something really sparked a light in me. The beginning of my senior year of high school started and I even got a bunch of my friends to hop on a track. The song made noise in our town and school and really gave me a new perspective on the way this music shit works. Even though the song was a partially joke, it still shined a light on people who want to vibe and have a good time, and I finally saw it from an artist’s perspective. High school went on and I started to write and write. I probably had like 4 different concepts for what I wanted to drop that never ended up releasing anything besides a few singles. Come time for college and I had scrapped everything I previously did it hopes of starting fresh. That’s where the idea for ’thoughts of the lost youth’ came into play. I wanted to turn all my scraps into something I could genuinely create and put out something meaningful.

How would you define your sound?

I mostly do rap, but sometimes in a melodic style. However, my instrumentals can range from many different genres and I honestly think I could fit on a song with any artist out there.

Cubase, Protools, or neither?

Use protools when recording.

This might be a tricky one but Studio vs Live - Which do you prefer and why?

I personally use Ableton Live to make beats and record myself when I’m not in the studio. I really like how the layout is and once you get a feel for it, you got it.

How do you collaborate with vocalists and other artists?

My only past collaborations have been with friends I’d bring into my room that I had wrote a verse for and basically guide them through it. As long as we’re getting something done, I’m very easy to work with.

If you had the opportunity to work with one of your favorite musical artists, who would you most like to collaborate with and why?

My all time favorite artists range from Kanye to Michael Jackson and recently Tyler, the Creator, but one artist I’d really want to work with from the newer generation is Baby Keem. His music just gives me a great vibe and I love the simplistic yet complicated sound.

What are your future plans? What can we look forward to for the rest of 2022?

I’m working on multiple projects currently - including ’thoughts of the lost youth’ which should be fully released before the end of June. As for the future, I’m going to be going on a little hiatus from social media for about a month or two over the summer and then will be going full throttle from there. I have so much music that I’m ready to share with the world just ready to be unraveled. It’s gonna be a long process, but it’s a ride I’m down for.
