‘Purge And Flourish’ from Dave Belding is my kind of music. It’s a single that packs one hell of a punch and gets going without a moment's delay. The fire comes from a place of grunge and you can feel that instantly. There are the groaning guitars, playing with fervour in the blackened mists. The bass calls for more and the drums are happy to give it. It’s a swirling pool of immense tone and you’re completely sucked in. Then the vocals arrive. The highest praise, the absolute highest. Mix Cobain and Staley and you’re there. There’s a tonne of texture but also control, a power in the back that leads to some perfect rises and some glorious crashes.
Dave Belding has become an instant new favourite of mine. The heart and soul in his music is inspiring and the precision of it all is just as golden. There is a core of grunge but the sound reaches far past that, it pulls itself into the today and calls upon the powers of contemporary rock to make it more than it could have been alone. ‘Purge And Flourish’ is a fantastic showcase of that 90s sound alive and well today. Still as insightful, still as powerful and still as thrilling as ever.
