Cleveland, OH, United States

Marcus Smith is a rapper, singer, and songwriter born and raised in Cleveland, OH. After 15 years in hip-hop bands Black & Broke and SANKURO, Smith is now navigating the music scene as a solo artist.

Smith is a self-taught multi-instrumentalist. This track is brilliant! We loved it so much over at TJPL NEWS that we had to crown him Number 1 this week. Starting with piano when he was 14, he learned a new instrument each summer for five years, including guitar, bass, ukulele, and drums. Some of his favorite artists and biggest influences include Childish Gambino, Bruno Mars, Lenny Kravitz, Weird Al Yankovic, and Hanson. After a summer musician residency at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and being featured on multi-platinum recording artist Asher Roth's album, The Greenhouse Effect Vol. 3, Smith kept his creativity flowing and crafted a 15 track album that fuses elements of hip-hop, rock, pop, funk and soul into a genre-bending experience to quench your musical thirst. The first single from Marcus Smith's upcoming album is titled She Don't Care, an upbeat UK Garage track reminiscent of early 00’s Craig David records, will be released May 4th on all streaming platforms. Its based off of a tweet from a friend nearly a decade ago that reads "She only sleeps when the sun rises, the birds chirp, and the traffic starts."

NUMBER 8

We Hate Records - Chronicles Of Electronicals

London, United Kingdom

Credit - Darius Kanuga

We Hate Records sent us their 9 track release titled 'Chronicles of Electronicals'. This is an experimental collection of tracks that are rooted in electronic, EDM and ambient sounds. The album opens with 'Ma Bones', where we're given the beat of a strong kick drum along with a shaker. A melodic key synth then joins with the occasional vocal chops before the introduction of fuller male vocals. "Gotta feel it in my bones" is sung in varying ways on repeat. This track makes so many interesting twists and turns in the productive elements and use of instrumentalisation. Bass synths, strings, 80s-inspired key synths, percussion loops, vocal chops, house-inspired bass rhythms - You name it, I'm sure it's found somewhere in this mix! The vocals take a turn and we're given the vocals of indie rock and when combined with the electronic elements of this track I find it pretty amazing. Their creative flair is incredibly inspiring and has taught me a thing to two about creativity! This track extends to 5:49 in length and holds its own all the way through in its twists and turns. Check out full review in our featured artist section!
