You Won't Believe Your Ears: Gary Dranow's 'Floating Away' Redefines Rock Music!

But this single sits in that little niche of rock that’s kinda slow, kinda powerful, heartfelt and warming. The kind of rock that you away to with a lighter held above your head. The kind of rock you know all the words to without realising that you do. It’s that kind of rock, perhaps the best kind. The song starts out nice and smooth, the beat is catchy right from the get-go and the hook is wonderfully strong. The guitar strums nice open chords that fall upon your shoulders like summer rain. The harmony between all the instruments, spearheaded by the bass line, wells in your chest and lets out a golden sigh. Then the vocals take it to a whole other level.



There’s a power behind them but it doesn’t come out all at once. We’re chilling here and the vocals know it. They settle into the melody as you settle into your favourite chair. They flow with the beat, sway here, sigh there, it’s a beautiful day and they’re seizing it. The melody folds around them, they grow and grow together. Soon another vocal jumps on, higher and lighter, it harmonises with the main Vox and together they blow the sky wide open. The clash, the joy, the chorus. It’s stellar it truly is. The track ebbs and flows around soft corners and before you know it it’s over. Thank God for the repeat button.


Gary Dranow is an eclectic rock master. Every sound, every style, every inch of the rock space has his name on it somewhere. ‘Floating Away’ is chill and smooth and blissful and my oh my is it great. An absolute must-listen.
