The Margaret Hooligans Tackle the Prison Industrial Complex in New Single 'Driver!'

Hailing from Bala Cynwyd, USA, The Margaret Hooligans release 'Driver!,' a potent critique of America's prison system, as part of their upcoming album 'ThunderHole Rock n’ Roll.

The Margaret Hooligans, known for their incisive musical commentary, continues to push boundaries with their latest single "Driver!" Released on March 26, 2024, the song serves as the sixth release from their anticipated fourth album, "ThunderHole Rock n’ Roll." With "Driver!", the band delves into the dark corners of the American prison industrial complex, highlighting issues of capitalism, racial injustice, and wealth disparity.

Meg Cratty, wielding an electric tenor guitar, conjures discordant yet melodic riffs that starkly contrast with her plaintive vocal delivery. The song incorporates the iconic cry "Attica" in its chorus, reminiscent of Al Pacino's portrayal in Dog Day Afternoon, drawing parallels to the notorious 1971 prison riots sparked by inhumane conditions.

The Margaret Hooligans have been on our radar for around a year or more now, with their releases always sticking in my mind for their uniqueness and challenging artistry. With the release of 'Driver!' The Margaret Hooligans continue to keep that bond fresh with their electrifying political lyrics and their hard-hitting execution. So, what can we expect from 'Driver!'? Drum roll please, the opening demands attention. The drumming is hard-hitting and punk-infused. They lift the mood ready for the lead guitar to take the stage. The vocals are somewhat soft in relation to the rest of the track but they work - they're sweet but not too sweet. There are so many contrast within this song that make it work so well. Skater rock, classic rock, even elements of shoegaze. It's another memorable release from The Margaret Hooligans, that's for sure!

As the song develops, there are several time signature twists and turns that keep the song fresh. The vocals get grittier, and the chops and changes are as free as they need to be. There's a lot of noise but it's all good noise! Talented are this duo. So make sure you give them a listen! Go for it, you'll find the link below.
