ARTIST BACKGROUND

Yung Papi Bonito from Calgary, Canada is a Hip-Hop artist who has been in the music game for some time. After losing his parents he now uses music to cope with his grief and uses music to connect with what he calls "many great artist and friends". Making his gratitude for Hip-Hop clear he holds the view that Hip-Hop and music saved his life. His connectedness to music sees him on a mission to help save others too. "I wanna be able to do that for someone someday, I wanna use my voice to create music for everybody." I was honored to be asked to review this track and to interview the soul behind the music. So let's get into it then!

NEW KID ON THE BLOCK REVIEW

'New Kid on the Block' is one of the favorite hip-hop tracks I've heard this month. Opening with a smooth piano synth in major we're promised something hopeful for the 'New Kid on the Block'. A distorted white noise hides in the background in its opening to suggest something atmospheric is about to come into the track. As the drum kicks come in we prepare for the rap flow that is about to take us on a journey. This artist has a story to tell, opening with the statement "I'm from the block and my pops is illiterate" sets us up for something honest and reflective. The lyrics in this track tell the story of an underdog who refuses to back down as he reflects on his journey. The rap flow is simple and powerful, the vocals are mixed to perfection and packs a punch in all the right places. There is a variety of instruments in this piece from piano, synths, ambient samples, trap loops and drum kicks that are clear and hold their place well in the mix. This is a great track for you hip-hop lovers. You want a hip-hop track? Here it is. I can't wait to hear more from Yung Papi Bonito.

INTERVIEW

What would be your ultimate achievement for your latest single? Is there a particular vision that you had when putting the song together?

My ultimate achievement for this song was to feel heard and hopefully help others find their voice.

I had the vision of creating and documenting a come up story because that’s what the song felt like to me.

If you could define music in one short sentence (no cheating) what would you say?

Music in one short sentence. its my medium it's how I express myself.

Live! I like to feel the peoples energy.

How do you collaborate with vocalists and other artists?

Just be open with them about what you wanna collaborate on and see if they're down.

If you had the opportunity to work with one of your favorite musical artists, who would you most like to collaborate with and why?

Jay Z its hov he the goat.
