Mixing rock and jazz doesn’t cut it for many. It lacks the attitude of rock and the melodies of jazz, it seems when the two meet, they do so in a no man's land devoid of imagination. There are, we now discover, exceptions to that rule. One is Alec Berlin’s ‘Minor Maad’, a rocky instrumental track that pushes all of the rock staples, but every now and then we feel a jazzy flush coming on and it brightens the track up. The end result is a song that feels like a rock instrumental, it adds flashes of jazz for colour and comes out feeling like a song that would do well in an Oceans heist movie. It's stylish, suave and full of character going at a pace. ‘Minir Mead’ is unlike anything I’ve heard, if you’re a rock fan and know the name Snarky Puppy, take a load off and chill at Alec Berlin’s. The music is to die for.
