Belfast Trio Mix Social Commentary and 70s Sax Appeal in Their Latest Single
Auld Gods Deliver Social Media Satire with "Firefly"
Indie rock collective Auld Gods released Firefly on November 15, 2024, blending sharp social commentary with irresistible grooves and vintage instrumentation. Taken from their sophomore album Weird Skin, Firefly is a witty anthem critiquing social media pressures, wrapped in honking 70s-inspired saxophones and a show-stopping guitar solo that pulls no punches.
Formed during the pandemic, Auld Gods bring together Belfast’s finest: Marty Williamson, a guitarist who’s worked with Sinéad O’Connor and the Psychedelic Furs, vocalist Davy McLarnon, a local legend from Shock Treatment, and Marty’s brother Mike, who adds a dynamic range of instrumentation and programming.
About Firefly
Centered on themes of disinformation and the façade of social media, Firefly is a vibrant indie rock stomper. The track’s honking saxophones give it a nostalgic edge, while the searing guitar solo in the middle-eight breaks into modern, boundary-pushing territory. “It’s a tune about keeping up appearances in a world built on filters and façades,” explains Marty Williamson.
As track seven on Weird Skin, Firefly stands out with its infectious energy and biting lyrics. The album itself showcases the trio’s stylistic diversity, moving effortlessly between rock anthems, electronica, and near-folk.
