Driven by upright piano and analog synths, the LA-based alt-pop artist unpacks identity, trauma, and emotional delay on the first single from upcoming EP The Cycle of Things.

Brett Gleason, the LA-based alt-pop singer-songwriter known for his introspective ballads and cinematic soundscapes, returns with a powerful new single “Sensory Deprived”, released on 8 April 2025. The track is the lead release from his upcoming EP The Cycle of Things, due 15 July 2025.

Anchored by upright piano and layered with analog synths, Sensory Deprived builds from a slow burn into a thunderous chorus, both musically and emotionally. At its core, the track is a visceral reflection on emotional detachment and delayed self-awareness—a personal reckoning with how trauma, diagnoses, and upbringing shape the way we process feelings in a world that demands constant, immediate reaction.

“‘I don’t know, I can’t define, how do I feel this time?’” Gleason sings, laying bare the internal struggle of not knowing how you feel until long after the moment has passed.

“It takes time to know how I feel,” Gleason shares. “I need to take myself out of the situation and get some distance… to sleep on it, journal it out, write a song if I need to.”

Performed, written, and recorded by Gleason himself and co-produced with Blak Emoji, the track’s minimal yet immersive production is layered with Gleason’s hallmark intensity—melding art pop, dream pop, and trip-hop elements with poetic lyricism and a dark, cathartic edge.

Openly addressing his experience as a gay man living with bipolar disorder, Gleason’s music offers unfiltered access into a world of introspection, healing, and identity. His songs, described as “tender ballads turned epic moments,” reflect influences from Tori Amos to Rufus Wainwright and Trent Reznor.

Gleason, originally from Long Island, immersed himself in the arts after struggling with a speech impediment. He later studied music and literature at The New School University in NYC, and has since released three critically acclaimed albums. Now based in LA, Sensory Deprived marks the start of his most emotionally open and sonically expansive work to date.
