Frank Renfordt’s Liquor Store captures the pain of a complicated relationship, blending Americana, rock, and folk influences.
The Cumberland River Project’s Liquor Store: A Raw and Emotional Journey
The Cumberland River Project, the brainchild of Frank Renfordt, returns with a gripping new single, Liquor Store. This emotionally charged song tells the tale of a toxic, complicated relationship, where love and struggle intertwine against the backdrop of heartfelt Americana and rock influences.
Renfordt, who has carved out a distinctive niche in the storytelling tradition of Americana and folk rock, wrote, produced, and performed the song himself, handling vocals, bass, keys, and drum arrangements. The song is elevated further by Italian session guitarist Alessandro Maffei, whose expressive playing brings the song’s emotional core to life.
"Liquor Store is about a relationship where two people are trapped in a cycle of love and destruction. They know they shouldn’t stay, yet they can’t let go. It’s the push and pull that makes this song so raw and relatable." – Frank Renfordt

A Story Told Through Music
With a moody and melancholic atmosphere, Liquor Store uses vivid storytelling and soulful instrumentation to bring the listener into its world. The lyrics paint a picture of a romance filled with passion, regret, and inevitable heartbreak, set to the rich textures of folk-infused rock.
The cover art, shot by Dirk Schmidt, a renowned people’s photographer from Hagen, perfectly complements the song’s emotional weight, capturing the feeling of loneliness and longing that echoes throughout the track.
Frank Renfordt: The Storyteller Behind the Music
Renfordt’s musical journey began at age ten when he first picked up a guitar, leading him to play bass in his hometown rock band, RING. Years later, his passion for Americana and country music, fueled by travels to Nashville, led to the creation of The Cumberland River Project.
His work has earned international recognition, including finalist placements in the UK Songwriting Contest and an Outstanding Achievement in Songwriting award at the Great American Song Contest. His second album, A Smell of Gravy, was named Best Country Album at the German Rock & Pop Awards.
With Liquor Store, Renfordt continues to prove himself as a master of heartfelt, storytelling-driven songwriting, blending Americana, folk, and rock into an authentic, compelling sound.
