Dan Devon has revealed a complex track that takes the shape of a classic R&B song but brings so much more to the table. ‘Winona’ is deep, the bass rumbles up from the start, then drags you down with it. Synthetic beeps and shimmies line the walls of the track as the vocals get ready to go. The percussion clicks them in then keeps to the back, making sure the song hits those phat beats. The lyrics are splendid. They push through the thick instrumental with ease, cutting the chaff but keeping things on the lowdown. The style comes through hard, the intimacy with the sound. There is a lot of humanity hidden in the silence.
‘Winona’ took me off guard. The swirling harmonies that spark when vocal and synth tones alight. They break up the monotony and deliver a song that is utterly unique and awe-inspiring. Dan Devon knows what’s up, and he knows it well.
