Department S's 'So Far Away (Feat. Baz Warne)': A Thrilling Ride Fusing 80s Synth with Modern Indie

Department S is bringing the pace from the 80s back into the modern world of indie music. Their single, ‘So Far Away (Feat. Baz Warne),’ finds a perfect balance between bright indie guitar and powerful 80s-era synth. The sound climbs a mountain at the start, finding footholds in drum rolls and splashing toms over top of some incredible bass textures. When we reach the summit the view is stupendous; we can see ranges of vocal melodies, synthetic clouds crowd the sky and the layers of dramatic vocals reach out before us. But what goes up, must come down. The drop is a treat for the senses. It’s so high that you can practically feel the wind rushing over your skin, flying through your hair. The bass pushes, the synth flies, the drums support and the vocals lead the way. The light is blinding, the speed is thrilling and the melody is holding the whole thing together.
When ‘So Far Away (Feat. Baz Warne)’ begins you can’t tell where it will end up. You certainly couldn’t have told me it was going to be such a spectacle. What Department S have shown with this song is that they can take big risks and that when they do, they seem to pay off. A splendid single, full of heart and 80s goodness. A definite banger.
