DREAM OF A MAN IN A TOP HAT

The Destination

Boston, United States

Dream of a Man in a Top Hat are a post-punk experimental duo who have delivered a sound that is profoundly lucid with their latest single, ‘The Destination’. Thoughts wrap around your mind and contract as spinning synths, pulled guitar wails and punchy drums drive home the melody, the vocals calling and responding through the fog. The sound is birthed from 80s punk mixed with 70s psychedelia. Add some Bowie flair a pinch of Nirvana texture and wrap it up with Depeche Mode instruments and you uncover a Dream of a Man in a Top Hat - a sound that is born from the aspirational ooze of the many.

The song starts in a winding twisting who-world. Its climbing melodies are Sisyphean, they add tension and lull you into a dark slumber. The guitar is discordant and alive. It sways to the melody and looks at you with beady eyes as it laments the misty haven in which it dwells. The vocals are your guide through this eclectic Neverland of sound. They rise and fall, harmonise and clash. Right at specific moments when the song could become repetitive, they switch it up. ‘The Destination’ is out of reach, you focus on the never-ending journey that takes you on a time-tour through sounds from punk, rock, techno and grunge. You come up for air at the end, but now you’re addicted.

A thoroughly refreshing track that does wonders for your psyche and opens your inner eye. - FREDDIE MCKEE
