Joyeur - Underbelly
Los Angeles, United States
Los Angeles-based Joyeur is gearing up to release her debut album, How to Love Yourself and Not Destroy Everything—dropping May 25th. Her lead single “Underbelly" is a song about the power of vulnerability and the intense fear that comes with exposing the most seemingly unlovable and tender parts of ourselves. The single is accompanied by a self-directed music video in which Jo reveals it all.
After making it to Number 4 in this week's Top 10 Videos we reached out to Joyeur to get some info!
INTERVIEW
What would be your ultimate achievement for your latest single 'Underbelly'? Is there a particular vision that you had when putting the album together?
I would love to hear this song arranged by an orchestra with a full horn section and
strings. This song is my heart on my sleeves and to hear it amplified and expanded in
that way would be so juicy for me.
Who was involved in the project alongside you?
My longtime collaborator and friend Anna Feller produced the album with some
support from Coke Youngblood, DavOBeats, and Vampsy.
When did you first realise that you had the potential to be an artist? Is there a memory that has stuck in your mind as the turning point for you?
I have always written songs and performed at my family church, but I really saw my
artist potential while I was working at a music management firm where I was a
“songplugger”. I helped pitch songs by our songwriter clientele to Top 40’s artists and I
just didn’t think the songs I was pitching were better than mine. It just didn’t feel that out
of reach anymore being so close to the industry.
How would you define your sound?
Playfulness that’s fueled by an undercurrent of complexities within the human
experience. Its organic sounds blended with percussive, electronic linings. Self-actualized art-pop!
This might be a tricky one but Studio vs Live - Which do you prefer and why?
Definitely itching to be live, at the moment! Anna and I have been in the studio for
most of our existence producing and recording. I’m so ready to meet all of you and
connect!
If you had the opportunity to work with one of your favorite musical artists, who would you most like to collaborate with and why?
I’d love to collaborate with other female producers like Kito and EmpressOf. I want
women in the forefront of this boy club industry. But at the same time, Thundercat…
because he’s just rad and seems like an ally.
What are your future plans? What can we look forward to for the rest of 2022?
My debut album “How to Love Yourself and Not Destroy Everything” comes out May
25 and I’ve got an album release show at Kiss Kiss Bang Bang here in LA to celebrate
on June 1st, and many more shows to be announced.
Where can we find the track?
On a personal note, I'd just like to say, I wish you all the best and thank you for your time! It has been a real pleasure to do this with you!
