Infusing Classic Reggae Rhythms with a Modern Twist, Marius's Latest Single is a Beacon for the Genre's Resurgence

Reggae is a genre of music that flows into and out of public favour over generations. The indie scene, as it stands at the moment, is falling into a creative Reggae Revolution; many artists are, knowingly or unknowingly, taking the form and rhythm of reggae and using it to improvise, diversify, and add depth to their already unique sounds. One artist taking reggae into the modern day while sticking close to its chill roots and structured rhythms is François Marius, with his single, ‘Rasta Dance (Radio Edit).’

The song cuts into being in rapid fashion. The first beat is a hit and away we go, full force into the reggae vibe and into the flow of the track. The rhythm is where the heart of the single beats, and it beats strong. The rhythms grab you, the kick to snare, the hi-hat catching you on the off. Guitar stabs and bass line walks stay tight, forming the structure that will herd you through the song and toward that bolstered chorus. The track livens up, the sound spreading outward and inward, the eyes of the vocalist chilling in the back aglow with the melody. ‘Rasta Dance’ is just that, a song to move to. The vocals are there acting as accent points, the French language reeling us in with its smooth transitions and low stresses, a wonderful and new pairing to the reggae style.

François Marius has nailed this single. It’s dark at times, the instrumental in the back contrasting against the light bright beats upfront. The chorus falls in and out just as you want it to and that rhythm keeps you on your toes the whole time. Reggae is a style that takes some people a while to sink their teeth into, but once you find that artist you like, once you feel the groove … there is nothing quite like it.
