Izzy Pingrey is prying indie-pop up with a crowbar formed of 90s rock and modern post-rock. Her debut single release, ‘sick of it,’ takes everything you know and love about those great 90s rock-pop bangers and condenses them into the language of contemporary music. The chugging acoustic tones that lie behind a fervent vocal melody bring back nostalgia for songs I’ve never heard. Never has a pop song felt so new and classic all at once. There is a staying power here, there is a true sense of worldly musicality. But what am I saying? The be-all end-all is that ‘sick of it’ is a brilliant post-pop tune and as soon as you get 5 seconds into it you’ll be hooked for life.
When pop met rock it was a good time. But now, after the dust has settled, these new sounds are taking the world by storm. I see big things ahead for Izzy Pingrey and her smashing single, ‘sick of it.’ Truly inspired and freeing.
