Anchen Ji’s blend of rhythm and vocals leads to some fascinating tracks. Tracks that push and pull at your expectations, leaving them tired and defunct on the floor. ‘Wait It Out’ is one of these tracks. It begins slow, methodical. Beats pop and shimmy left and right, you can feel that careless vocal coming on, but it never comes. Instead, a bright and new vocal, pulsing with clarity and harmony, comes out from the instrumental and takes the song by storm. The lights glow brighter, the beat digs down deeper. Rhythmic synths pluck and stab, barking at the melody in perfect time, creating a feeling, creating energy. A future chorus of synthetic percussion.
‘Wait It Out’ blew me away. It sounds like nothing else. It sits between pop and synth in a genre all its own. It’s not quite shoegaze, it’s not quite dance. It’s something new and it is fantastic. Anchen Ji is a name to remember for sure.
