Mery's Key's latest release, "Breadcrumbs," strikes a chord with anyone who has faced the frustration of unrequited love. The song paints an emotional portrait of longing and slow realisation, with lyrics that speak to those who have been "breadcrumbed"—receiving just enough affection to keep hope alive but never reaching true commitment. This narrative builds towards a powerful climax where the protagonist finally acknowledges they deserve more.
What sets "Breadcrumbs" apart musically is its unconventional use of the bass guitar as the lead instrument. Inspired by the techniques of Victor Wooten, the bass drives both the harmonic and melodic elements, creating a rich and immersive sound. The production, blending nostalgic 80s and 90s influences with a modern sheen, wraps around this unusual pairing, resulting in a track that feels both timeless and fresh.
With its raw emotion and cinematic quality, "Breadcrumbs" would be at home in any modern TV drama or soundtrack. Fans of Coldplay, Natalie Imbruglia, and Newton Faulkner will find much to love in Mery's Key's heartfelt anthem of love, loss, and self-discovery. "Breadcrumbs" was released on 13th September across all major platforms.

INTERVIEW
"Breadcrumbs" taps into the emotional journey of unrequited love. Can you tell us more about the personal or musical inspiration behind this track?
Well, in terms of the theme, before we found each other we've both had our disappointments and unfortunately, it's something we often see going on around us. In terms of musical inspiration, we're glad you asked because it's rather unusual as a song; the choruses don't actually include the word breadcrumbs as the keyword or hook. We think the lyrics of the whole song render the concept pretty clearly but it's really like the penny doesn't actually drop until the bridge, where Breadcrumbs is finally mentioned and the song leads towards its climax, which reflects how people usually need time to accept what's going on in this situation and how the frustration builds up over time. We were inspired to try out this structure after hearing "Something More Than Free" by Jason Isbell. Also in that song, "Something More Than Free" isn't sung until the bridge. We love bringing in inspiration from other genres.
The bass takes centre stage in this song, which is quite unconventional for a ballad. What made you choose this approach, and how did Victor Wooten's style influence the overall sound?
Victor Wooten holds pretty much any sane bass player's respect, even if they don't venture into solistic styles of playing themselves. All of these alternative playing styles allow the bass to provide the voice with all the harmonic support of a guitar or keys, yet provide much more depth. Victor Wooten is perhaps the closest to being a household name in terms of solo bass playing, but one of Kevin's biggest inspirations as a bass player is Seth Horan, an American singer-songwriter/solo bass player who was the real trailblazer of the concept of using the instrument on its own to accompany his own voice. These influences don't just impact Breadcrumbs but everything we do, and we do also go out to perform our songs as purely a duo, just bass guitar and female voice, much as you'd more commonly see someone on the stage with guitar or keys.
You’ve described the production of "Breadcrumbs" as a blend of nostalgic 80s and 90s elements with a modern twist. What drew you to these eras, and how do you see them fitting into the track’s contemporary appeal?
We grew up with that music, and we just love stuff like Charlie Puth and Dua Lipa that heavily features a lot of classic analog synth sounds but with a certain sheen and extra depth that music production has now.
"Breadcrumbing" is a term that a lot of people can relate to. What message do you hope listeners take away from this song, especially those who may have experienced a similar situation?
We very much hope that people in such a situation will feel seen when they hear the lyrics and realise that they all deserve better and start to act on it. It'd great if our music can not only be casually consumed but have a real impact on people's lives.
Your music has been likened to tracks featured in TV shows like Grey's Anatomy and House. If you could choose any show or movie to feature "Breadcrumbs," where do you think it would make the most impact?
Well, ideally someone with a time machine would help us go back and land our song in one of those shows, they were great! Given the song's theme and how often it recurs in TV series, it could so land in any romantic drama really. Actually, every now and again someone does say that they can hear a little country influence in our music (even if we don't hear it coming through), so... Virgin River? Or The Bold Type!
