The city of Birmingham will unite this Wednesday, 30 July, for a moment of historic and emotional resonance: a public cortege procession for legendary rocker Ozzy Osbourne, set to begin at 1pm on Broad Street and conclude at the now-iconic Black Sabbath Bridge.
From his raw beginnings in Aston to global stardom, Ozzy’s story has always been rooted in Birmingham. Now, the city that raised him will honour him one last time—publicly, loudly, and with love.
Final Farewell Through the Heart of Birmingham
The funeral cortege will make its way down Broad Street, accompanied by a live brass performance by local favourites Bostin’ Brass, in a unique and fitting tribute that reflects both Ozzy's spirit and Birmingham’s enduring music legacy.
Fans are expected to line the streets, flooding the area with flowers, memories, and emotion as the procession passes by key landmarks. The atmosphere will be celebratory but deeply heartfelt—a final send-off befitting one of the greatest icons of heavy metal.
Black Sabbath Bridge: Where Tributes Continue to Grow
The cortege will conclude at Black Sabbath Bridge, where thousands of fans have already gathered over the past week, leaving floral tributes, candles, handwritten notes, and memorabilia by Ozzy’s commemorative bench. For those unable to attend, a live stream of the bench remains active for global viewers wishing to pay their respects virtually.
Lord Mayor’s Statement: “He Was a Son of Birmingham”
Councillor Zafar Iqbal MBE, JP, paid tribute on behalf of the city:
“Ozzy was more than a music legend – he was a son of Birmingham. It’s only right that we honour him in the place where it all began.”
The Lord Mayor also confirmed that the Osbourne family had personally funded the cortege, enabling the Council and its partners to deliver a safe, dignified tribute to the global icon.
Traffic and Travel Disruption: What You Need to Know
Broad Street will close from 7am on 30 July. Local access may be limited.
Buses and trams will be diverted during the event.
Stewards will be present to manage crowds.
Visitors are encouraged to arrive early and use public transport.
Broad Street will reopen as soon as possible post-event.
