Danish indie-pop artist Sasha Adrian explores trauma, recovery, and self-love in her cathartic sophomore EP Shell, blending confessional lyrics with emotional soundscapes.
Denmark’s rising indie-pop artist Sasha Adrian is back with her sophomore EP Shell, released on October 4th, 2024. The EP is a raw and introspective exploration of trauma, healing, and self-discovery, delivered through a blend of emotionally charged lyrics and indie-pop soundscapes. Produced in collaboration with Celebration Records, Shell offers a collection of five tracks that traverse the emotional highs and lows of Sasha’s personal journey.
Following her acclaimed debut EP Token, Sasha’s Shell delves deeper into her experiences with sexual trauma and PTSD, using music as a medium to process and share these difficult chapters of her life. The title track, Shell, represents the transformation that comes from breaking free from the protective barriers we build around ourselves, offering listeners a sense of empowerment and hope.
Sasha’s innovative approach to songwriting is apparent throughout the EP. For example, in the track Free of You, Sasha instructed her drummer to intentionally play out of rhythm to sonically convey the chaotic feeling of trying to hold everything together while everything is falling apart. This raw sound mirrors the intensity of the lyrics, which express anger over the innocence and peace taken from her.
Adult, another standout track, tackles the humor and confusion of navigating adulthood, where Sasha reflects on the gap between the freedom she expected and the harsh realities of life. “As a kid, you can’t wait to grow up,” Sasha shares, “but somewhere in your twenties, you start wondering if you’ll ever really get there.”
Recorded between Denmark and Sweden, Shell features lush instrumentation, combining temperamental guitars, gentle piano, and Sasha’s compelling vocals. The EP culminates with Appointment, a haunting ballad exploring the strain PTSD can place on relationships, leaving an unforgettable emotional imprint.
