The Freight's 'Cool' A Rock Reinvention of Gwen Stefani's 04' Hit That Boils Down to Bare Essentials

The Freight have revealed their latest cover single, ‘Cool,’ and cool it is indeed. It’s a cover of Gwen Stefani’s 04’ hit that takes the modern rock format and boils it down to the bare essentials. You’ve got that bass line really kicking up steam, then once it’s underway and the percussion is sat in its hook, the guitars jump into the fray. It’s freeing to hear rock played just the way you like it and I instantly fell in love with the power and pace of The Freight.
‘Cool’ is cool, no two ways about it. It’s slow in the start, keeping things simple and drawing you in with a false sense of security. But once you’re in, the band pick up the pace and really go for it. The chorus explodes with colour and the two part harmonies blend so well with the backing. The bridge adds some new ideas, they fly around your head like paradise birds before landing and slipping into the chorus so subtly it was like they were there the whole time. And I think that is a great feature of The Freight. On the surface, they seem like a stand up rock band — but the more you listen, the deeper their sound goes. ‘Cool’ is a fantastic track that just keeps getting better. A triumph of indie bliss rock.
