When songs evolve, so do the stories behind them.
Released in September 2023, Loveday No. 9 finds Brisbane/Meanjin's Mermaid Avenue at a crossroads—still joyfully unbound by genre, but grounded in a moment of real emotional transition. Across 10 meticulously shaped tracks, the band mixes alt-country with indie rock textures and Americana warmth, capturing the feeling of letting go while continuing to grow.
“Writing a song to fit a genre doesn’t work for us.”
That’s how frontman Pete Clarke describes the band’s ever-fluid approach, and the album reflects that. The opener, Embers of Fires Gone (Piano), returns again as the closer—this time with lap steel—bookending the album with emotional continuity and sonic variety.

A goodbye with grace. A future wide open.
Loveday No. 9 is also a farewell to drummer Tony Judd, whose rhythmic foundation helped shape the band’s sound over three albums. It’s fitting that the record, tracked at Ian Haug’s Airlock Studios in the idyllic Samford Hills, feels like both a send-off and a new beginning.
More than just originals.
In addition to brand-new material, the album offers thoughtful remixes from their previous LP, curated by producer Jason Millhouse at Recordworks. These remixes nestle comfortably within the larger narrative of artistic reinvention. Visual artist Sheena Usher also contributes cover art, extending the album’s textural richness beyond the music.
Mermaid Avenue’s third record doesn’t just refuse to settle on one genre—it refuses to settle, full stop.
