🛼 THROWBACK | Vessna Scheff – “BUTTER” and the Disco Daydream of Carefree Confidence

A skating anthem with heart – and heat.
Back in September 2023, Vessna Scheff quietly dropped BUTTER, the kind of track that doesn’t just stick in your head – it lingers in your bones. A retrofuturistic blend of 80s disco and 90s R&B vocal flourishes, the song feels like the emotional rush of locking eyes with your crush beneath a roller rink disco ball. The backdrop? Synths shimmer, harmonies melt, and the beat pulses like neon on lacquered wood.

Written during the emotional chaos of the pandemic while caregiving, Scheff channelled exhaustion into joy. “I wanted to feel playful, fun, sexy, and confident,” she explains. “'BUTTER' was born out of dreaming about Adult Skate Night – specifically the unofficial Black skate nights across the U.S. They felt like freedom.” It’s a tribute to personal escapism and collective groove.

An artist across mediums.
Vessna’s journey spans far beyond music. From busking with a thrifted ukulele in San Francisco to multimedia performance pieces and a recent MFA from RISD, she’s long fused sound and vision. The accompanying BUTTER visualiser leans into that – all kaleidoscopic textures and sensual movement, a dreamscape for the emotionally tangled.

Teaming up with Philly producer Lee Clarke, BUTTER builds a sonic current that both comforts and exhilarates. It’s the sound of stepping out of survival mode, into flirtation, fantasy, and your fiercest self.
