Some songs catch you like rose thorns. They hook into your shirt and they fly away with your breath caught in their barbs. Songs like these don’t come about very often so when you find one you have to hope it holds on tight for the sake of your soul. Will Foley has created one such spectacular tune with ‘Last Chance Saloon,’ his latest single, and I hope to all which is holy, not his last. It’s a song of so many flavours but it is grounded in simplicity and quality. The bounce and sharp plucks of an acoustic guitar, its chords falling beside one another in perfect harrowing form. The strings rise, slow and low at first but they soon shoot up into the sky, casting wonderful shadows over our main player, the vocals. And wow, those vocals. To catch such emotion in a song is one thing, but Will Foley does three: he captures that emotion, he also makes it sound wonderful, and third — he makes the whole thing look so easy.
‘Last Chance Saloon’ is now near and dear to me. It’s a song that woke me up and fired the lights behind my eyes. By the end, I couldn’t figure out whether to laugh or cry. The only thing that I know for sure is that this is one hell of a single and it deserves the attention of the world stage. Keep on keeping on Will Foley. This music will take you places.
