A Fresh New Sound Captures the Duo's Evolution and a Bittersweet Farewell

Ottawa-based indie pop sensation Wotts is back on the scene with their latest single, "be kind," a musical homage to farewells and new beginnings. With a distinctive blend of 90s rock influences and contemporary indie vibes, "be kind" builds on the band's earlier body of work, adding fresh nuances to their already diverse portfolio.

About Wotts

Wotts, composed of Jayem and Ricky 100, has been a notable presence in the Canadian indie pop scene. They've graced the stages of major music festivals like RBC Bluesfest, Canadian Music Week, and Junofest, and if "be kind" is any indication, they've got a promising journey ahead.

Wotts: The Evolving Palette of Sound

Formed a few years ago, Wotts has consistently delivered tracks that merge modern sensibilities with classic influences. Their last EP, "Garden," released in June, took a departure from their typical 80s-tinged sound. However, "be kind" marks a return to nostalgic influences. Jayem, the band's vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, says, "We've been drawn to the 90s lately—be it Slowdive, Cocteau Twins, or George Clanton. The 'wall of guitars' in 'be kind' is our subtle nod to this era."

The Concept Behind "be kind"

The new single serves as a thematic farewell to people with whom the duo never got closure. "Life happens, and sometimes you don't get the chance to say goodbye. This track is our way of acknowledging the impact certain individuals had on us. We hope they're doing well, wherever they are," adds Jayem.

DIY Production: A Return to Roots

"be kind" was entirely produced, recorded, and mixed by the duo, making it a true DIY effort. They attribute this approach to the song's organic and unfiltered vibe, which resonates well with their audience.

The Cinematic Influence

In an unusual but effective approach, Jayem reveals that 90s films and TV shows heavily influenced the track's aesthetics. "Sometimes pretending the song is part of a soundtrack helps us get to where we want to go," says Jayem. This technique has been utilized before in their singles like "Domino" and "Before," providing a cinematic scope to their music.

What's Next for Wotts?

With "be kind" making waves, Wotts plans to continue their musical exploration. "We're super excited to share more songs," says bassist and guitarist Ricky 100. "New sounds are just pouring out now, and we can't wait for everyone to hear what we've been working on."
